The Inter-Faith Rotating Shelter, run by Cass Community Social Services (CCSS), was started in 1988 because of a need for additional food and shelter for homeless persons during the winter months. From October to May, churches of all sizes and denominations throughout the Detroit metropolitan area select a week to host this shelter. Our church has been a faithful participant since 1991.
During Hospitality Week our church is transformed into a welcoming shelter! Sunday School rooms become sleeping rooms, the Chapel becomes a room for watching movies, reading, relaxing, and quiet socialization. And our Fellowship Hall serves as dining space for breakfast and dinner, and entertainment and recreation in the evening.
Guests include men, women, and young children. They arrive each day at 5:30pm, have dinner, participate in evening activities and snack, and go to sleep. They are served breakfast in the morning and then leave for Cass programs during the day with a hearty brown bag lunch.
What Can I Do to Help?
Here are the sign up links for the donations and volunteer help we need to make our church a warm and welcoming refuge from the harsh realities of being without a home.

ADOPT A GUEST
Since it worked so well the last couple years, we are using the Adopt a Guest list instead of the traditional clothes closet again this year. We are asking anyone who’d like to help, to be prepared to purchase and drop off items on Monday, Feb 24th or Tuesday, Feb 25th. We will be asking our Guests on Sunday night, February 23rd, what their greatest needs are. Then we will put the “Adopt a Guest” list out on Signup Genius late that night for all of those who can and are willing to donate within a couple of days that week.
We are still collecting new undergarments for the women (Our Lady of Victory, First Presbyterian-Northville, and other churches are donating those items).
Thank you in advance for helping! Please call or text Ronda Holshouser at 248-231-6215 with questions.
Adopt a Guest Donation lists will be posted on Sunday, February 23 in the EVENING.

Would you rather just donate money and let us do the shopping? You can do that too! Click the button below and then choose “Hospitality Week” under OUTREACH MINISTRIES to give via credit card. Or write a check to FUMC with “Hospitality Week” in the memo line and drop it off or mail it to the church.
